July 16 2023 The Martinez Sturgeon rallied for a 10-8 victory over the Bakersfield Train Robbers at Waterfront Park. Martinez collected 12 hits and overcame an eight-run Bakersfield attack, while Bakersfield finished with seven hits and no errors. Martinez committed two errors.
Bakersfield took control with four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh to build an 8-5 lead. Martinez answered with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to complete the comeback. The Sturgeon scored twice in the fourth and once in the seventh before their late surge.
Trevor Rogers led Martinez with a 4-for-5 performance that included a home run and four RBI. Nick Adgar hit a two-run homer and went 2-for-5, while Eric Whitfield also homered and drove in a run. Luke Johnson added two hits and two RBI, and Tony Riley had two hits and scored twice.
Rick Phillips paced Bakersfield with two hits, including a home run, and one RBI. Chris Iazzetta drove in two runs, while Blake Vandiver and S. Goodwin each had two hits. Martinez pitcher Gabriel Rojas earned the win after throwing one scoreless inning with one hit and one strikeout. Bakersfield starter R. Portillo struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing five runs, and Aaron Hurt took the loss after recording one out and allowing three runs.
